Not-quite-the-final-frontier of Philanthropy…

This blog is being established to create an ongoing discussion about issues relating to fund raising and philanthropy. It accompanies COMM 4200: Fundraising at the University of Central Missouri, and originally, MC 589: Issues – Fund Raising & Philanthropy, a class taught by Prof. Linda Harvey in the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Kansas State University. The many students taking this class will post commentary regarding the information presented in class on a weekly basis to this blog. Please feel free to comment on what the students are discussing.

My name is Rebecca D and I’m a senior majoring in public relations at Kansas State. I enrolled in the Fund Raising & Philanthropy course with great interest. Fund Raising is in so much demand no matter where you are employed. The skills taught in this class would be very beneficial to my career. Learning the in and outs of fund raising and philanthropy will make me more valuable to my employer. I’m excited to learn more!

This is my first post for our Fund Raising and Philanthropy class and we are supposed to explain why we are taking this class and why it interest us. My response is simple. For the rest of my life I want to work with non-profits improving the quality of life for people. This means lots of fund raising and philanthropic activity and I realize that. I hope this class increases my awareness and understanding of how to create use and perform fund raising.

Is this how we’re supposed to add comments? I’m not seeing the discussion or a link to it

I decided to take this course because I know that I want to work for a nonprofit organization when I graduate and since fundraising is an essential part of this particular industry I thought it would be in my best interest to take a course about it. It has only been the second day and I have already learned so much. Fundraising and philanthropy are not synonymous. The two in fact are very different and play seperate roles, even though I am not quite sure what those roles are I am hoping to find out as the semester progresses. My personal objective for this course is to learn how to raise funds effectively and efficently. I also want to learn about diversity within the nonprofit sector and how organizations compete with one another, what is the best way for an organization to present itself. Overall I think this will be a great course to have because it will give me great insight into the nonprofit world and give me the advantage I need when I start to look for jobs.

I am taking this course mainly as a mass comm. elective. The reason I chose this specific class was because I knew it was something that would benefit me in the future. Whether or not I end up with a career in public relations, fund raising and philanthropy will be beneficial.

So I posted a comment on here last week, but I can’t find it now. Perhaps I posted it in the wrong spot?

Anyway, This is Ashley, a junior in PR, and I’m taking this class in order to broaden my horizon. When I decide to retire from the Air Force, I will most likely pursue a career in the civilian world, and the nonprofit sector is something I can see myself in.

I know that we are supposed to post once per week for our full points so I’m going to post again even though I might be a little early and their is no topic. I’m interviewing Dana Campbell is a Fundraising professional with the YMCA. As a part of the Council for Philanthropy in Kansas City I’m going to a conference and job shadowing and I’m really looking forward to hearing from the panel, hearing about job opportunities, and getting the information I need for my case study.

I’m truly enjoying the design and layout of your site. It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more often. Did you hire out a developer to create your theme? Excellent work!
